We wanted to take the time to relate to you the happy endings that do cross our path at the Bulverde Area Humane Society. Several weeks ago, what appeared to be a pure bred Australian cattle dog was brought into our shelter. Her rescuer found her running down FM 3159 near State High-way 46. When he stopped, she ran right to him and jumped into the truck. Since the family assumed such a well cared for pure bred must belong to someone, he brought her to us to care for until her owner could be found. The rescuer put up flyers and posters and volunteers at the shelter scoured the lost and found Web sites, just knowing we would find desperate owners searching for their lost family pet. In the meantime, other volunteers assessed the newest resident, who we dubbed “Brittany.” She walked well on a leash, was well fed, knew how to sit and lie and stay, and she was completely focused on whomever held the leash. After several days of searching with no results, we resigned ourselves to believe our precious Brittany was, perhaps, a dumpee. That made us sad, but we knew it wouldn’t take long to get her placed with a family that would love her. Arrangements were made to get her to the veterinarian for an evaluation and routine vaccinations. When a volunteer went out to microchip Brittany so her future owner would be have a much higher chance of locating her if she happened to get lost, we discovered that high up on her neck, was a microchip. In short, after discovering the chip, one of our dedicated volunteers tracked down the owner, who was overjoyed his girl was found. It turns out, our name wasn’t that far off the mark, and “Bella” went home with her relieved family the next day. So, the moral of this story is, microchip your four legged family members. You might have a “Bella” story to share one day.
