The annual Fausto Gutierrez Jamaica Family Festival will be presented Oct. 25 by Fabra, Fair Oaks, Cibolo Creek, Curington, and Kendall elementary schools along with Boerne Middle Schools North and South. All festivities will be take place at the Fabra Elementary cafeteria from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “The Jamaica” is a traditional family event in Hispanic communities from days gone by. The annual festival was renamed in honor and memory of Fausto Gutierrez who was instrumental in coordinating the community contributions for the event for 10 years. Fausto was honored in 2005 for his years of service and involvement. This year’s event is coordinated by the Fabra Elementary Parent Involvement Committee. Curington Elementary bilingual teacher Rosario Martinez and her husband, Josue, a Boerne attorney and member of the Boerne Optimist Club, serve as community liaisons. Community groups such as Kendall County Sheriff’s Department Child ID, Texas Department of Health, and local CHIP insurance program will provide information and services. Food, entertainment, and many activities for learning and fun will be presented during the evening. Tables and booths will offer information and activities on reading, parenting, health, safety, and staying drug free. Games such as “Guesstimation” and Bingo provide math challenges with prizes. Younger children enjoy “The Fish Pond” and “The Duck Pond” as well as face painting, cookie decorating, and cookie and cupcake walks, which add to the fun for everyone. Entertainment will be provided by the Fabra Dance Team and various Boerne ISD students and families.
