By Cindy Stone Special Contributor Mark your calendars for next Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. to come to BSC for a meeting with our board members to discuss the future of the Bulverde Senior Center. Topics will include a possible name change, fund-raisers, volunteers, and renovation or building addition. We need input from all members, whether you agree or disagree with proposals. Our board wants to provide the services desired most and set our goals in the way that will benefit the organization. Please come and share ideas. We are pleased that there soon will be transportation available for seniors in the area to get to doctor’s appointments, etc. This has been discussed for a good while and finally is becoming a reality, as we continue to grow and add needed services. Saturday’s get-together with our new PALs from Smithson Valley High School was a real success! Potato soup and chili prepared and served by the PALs was delicious, I heard from those who attended. They told me that they had a wonderful afternoon. The much needed Monday morning rain did not deter BSC members from coming for chair fitness, woodcarving, games and lunch. We welcomed United Way guests Sherman Krause and Terry Robinson, who told us about services helped by the Comal County United Way. At 1 o’clock we broke up into groups for Bunco and Encore practice. Our membership dues will increase for 2008 to $15, rather than the current $10 a year. Dues have not increased in the last eight years. Increases in our maintenance and utilities make the additional $5 per member per year necessary. Dues are payable each Jan. 1 for the new year and Doris Haeker will accept your 2008 dues during November and December. The Bulverde Senior Center has been designated as an emergency center for the city of Bulverde. This means that in times of a local emergency or disaster, items such as water, food supplies and information will be made available to BSC for distribution to local residents. There is a sign-up sheet at the center if you could volunteer for this. It may never be needed, but we want to be prepared to be a service to the community in the event there is an emergency situation. I hope you plan to attend the annual Village of Bulverde Jubilee this Saturday. The senior center will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. An Encore presentation is scheduled for 1 p.m. We will be selling a hot dog, drink and cookie for $3. Our float will be decorated Friday night for the parade, and some members will be riding on the float Saturday in their Halloween costumes. “When one door closes, another opens. We often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened for us.” - Unknown
