With the Central Catholic High School Buttons defeating the Holy Cross Knights in an incredibly tough defensive battle 13-9, it officially started the seven-day celebratory bowl week we experience in our area each high school football season.

The Holy Bowl between the Knights and the Buttons began a trio of contests that will feature an audience of around 30,000 high school football fans. Along with the holiest of bowls of course, both the Frontier and Chili are included. Here is a quick look at both games to be featured this week.

The 2007 version of the Frontier Bowl between the McCollum Cowboys (3-6, 2-2) and the Harlandale Indians (1-8, 0-4) lacks some of the luster this normally playoff implication laden contest usually features. The game is Friday night and will be aired on both KEDA AM 1540 and on my Website www.SouthsideSA.net.

The Cowboys still posses a solid chance at the post season if they are able to earn a victory. The Indians could be playing the role of spoiler.

Don’t think for a second that the Indians will come out and lay down. They would like nothing more than to head to the off season knowing they ended their south of Military Drive rivals season prematurely.

The Cowboys have been playing decent district ball with victories over Uvalde and Southside high schools. The Cowboys will advance to the playoffs with a victory and a Southside loss. Southside High School has its hands full when they take on the South San Bobcats this week.

I like the Cowboys in this one 28-21 and also to advance to the postseason.

The Chili Bowl features a couple of teams that are headed to the postseason. The Fox Tech Buffaloes (4-5, 4-1) and the Lanier Voks (5-4, 3-2) both responded nicely to slow non-district starts. This one is Saturday night and will also be broadcast on KEDA AM 1540.

The Buffaloes have been playing great 28-4A football, but can fall into third place behind the Voks if they come up short. With the Brackenridge Eagles already having clinched the district title, a win by either team will have seeding implications with both entering the Division II 4A bracket.

The Buffaloes and their bruising rushing attack will take this one 35-28 and capture the better seed over the Voks.

My high school football top six

1) Southwest Dragons (9-0, 5-0): This is as good as this program has ever been.

2) Central Catholic (9-0, 2-0): Big win over Holy Cross Knights ensures district crown and first round bye in TAPPS Division I playoffs.

3) Brackenridge Eagles (8-1, 5-0): As expected, the Eagles captured the 28-4A crown with one game to play.

4) Holy Cross (5-4, 1-1): Despite loss to Central Catholic, this is a very solid football team and one that will make noise in playoffs.

5) Fox Tech (4-5, 4-1): Will the Buffaloes enter the post season with momentum or with the memory of Chili Bowl loss this week?

6) Lanier Voks (5-4, 3-2): The Voks capture playoff spot despite predictions by most that said they would miss postseason.
