NISD wins grant to improve instruction of U.S. history

Sixty Northside teachers will hone their knowledge of American history thanks to a grant worth almost $1 million from the U.S. Department of Education.

The goal of the federal grant is, over the course of three years, to give teachers a strong foundation in U.S. history and help them improve instruction in the classroom.

NISD will partner with Texas State University and the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies to provide lectures and intensive professional development for the 60 elementary and secondary teachers in Northside.

The grant was established in response to low social studies scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress test, or NAEP, known as the nation's report card.

Northside science students receive international acclaim

Four of the five students from San Antonio who were awarded prizes this past spring at the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair are from Northside.

In October, Mustafa Iqbal from Jay Science and Engineering Academy,Nayana Ghosh-Choudhury from Health Careers High School, and Ian Panchevre and Stephen Odanovich from Clark High School were featured in the San Antonio Express-News.

"We've always honored our science students here at Northside, but it's very gratifying to see they're getting national and international recognition," said Alice Fiedler, Northside's secondary science instructional specialist.

"These are the students that are potential Nobel laureates."

Panchevre and Odanovich, seniors at Clark, have spent two years studying the sociology and biology of what attracts boys to girls and vice versa.
