One of the most fun things to do at the Bulverde Senior Center is to decorate the building, inside and out, for the Christmas season.

We will have many volunteers helping with the outside lights, the Christmas tree, hanging of wreaths, and probably singing a few tunes, on and off key. Never mind, what matters is the time and effort we will make to make the place begin to “look a lot like Christmas,” and the joy we have in doing so.

Decorating the center for the Christmas season will be at 11a.m. Nov. 22. We welcome any and all to come and help us.

A volunteer is someone who gives of his own free will, without expecting or guaranteed a reward. Besides the personal satisfaction gained by volunteering for a worthwhile cause, there are times when we are given some great news of a monetary reward coming, also.  Such is the case because of the tremendous amount of volunteer hours three of our members have so generously given to the BSC, the center has received a grant from ExxonMobil for $2,000, and the IBM Corporation for $1,000.

Phillip Gaston retired from ExxonMobile and Arnold Ulland retired from IBM Corporation. Phillip and Martha Gaston deliver Meals on Wheels and volunteer for various fund-raisers and activities. Martha was not employed by Exxon Mobile, but being the spouse of Phillip, she gets credit for her hours.  Phillip serves as a board member, and will be our next 5-K “Run for the Hills” chairman.

Arnold Ulland is also a board member and serves as the center’s treasurer. He willingly volunteers for fund-raisers and various other activities. He requested that the $1,000 grant be contributed toward the purchase of a floor burnisher.

EMS/SB (Andy Fox) will have a table set up at the center for the Vial of Life Program, which is a form to be filled out with vital health information of each individual. EMS encourages seniors to complete the form, which they should then place into the large prescription bottle provided and put into the refrigerator at home. A sticker comes with the vial, to place on the entrance door to alert the EMS to find your file of life in the refrigerator.

This is an excellent program and a great benefit to our community members. We hope you will take the time to participate.

Nov. 19 will be our annual Thanksgiving lunch, with turkey, dressing and all the trimmings. We will be having a number of guests from the community, as is our custom, so plan on bringing some extra food. This will be a wonderful time of food, fun and fellowship.

We will be closed on the 22nd to celebrate Thanksgiving.
