ImageDec., Jan. peak months for home fires

Special to the Southside Reporter

December and January have the highest occurrences of home fires and home fire deaths of all the months in the year.

About 74 percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with either no smoke alarms or inoperative smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Smoke Alarms in Every Home, a charitable campaign of Wayne Wright Lawyers, is in place to change these statistics. Wayne Wright Lawyers, a Texas law firm, partners with more than 75 fire departments in Texas, providing them with free smoke alarms to install for anyone in need.

The holiday season brings more risk of fires due to Christmas trees and other holiday décor placed too close to a heat source and the increased use of portable space heaters.

“We want everyone to be safe this winter and one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family is to install a smoke alarm in your home or to test the alarm you currently have,” said San Antonio District Fire Chief Randy Jenkins.

The Smoke Alarms in Every Home campaign is continuously working to create partnerships with other fire departments in hopes that every home will have the opportunity to become equipped with this simple life saving device.
