Kendall County authorities recovered a Tampa, Fla., murder victim’s rental car and took its driver into custody Saturday, holding him for questioning by Sunshine State police.

At 11:25 p.m. Saturday, a Kendall County sheriff’s deputy clocked a speeding vehicle westbound on Interstate 10 and attempted to stop it, but the driver accelerated and attempted to flee. A high-speed chase continued west on Interstate 10 before the suspect lost control of his vehicle and skidded off the highway and wrecked near Comfort.

The driver, Joshua James Wilkins, 23, was not injured and attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by law enforcement officers.

Hillsborough County, Fla., detectives came to Kendall County on Monday to interview Wilkins about a homicide that occurred in an apartment belonging to Wesley Bonhan, who was found dead by a roommate.

“The vehicle that Wilkins was operating had been reported stolen and part of an ongoing murder investigation in Hillsborough County, Florida,” said Kendall County Sheriff Roger Duncan. Hillsborough County Law Enforcement officials came to Kendall County on Monday to examine the vehicle and interview the suspect.

Wilkins is currently jailed in Kendall County on local charges of Unauthorized Use of Vehicle ($10,000 bond), Evading Arrest Detention with Vehicle ($10,000 bond), Evading Arrest Detention ($5,000 bond) and Reckless Driving ($5,000 bond). There is also a detainer on him for a warrant out of Florida for vehicle theft with no bond.
