Leticia Espinales Leticia Espinales Life As I See ItI am always stumped at this time of year. It gets harder and harder to come up with “gifts” that are truly unique and entertaining. We put a lot of thought into these purchases. Much discussion and brain storming goes on; after all, we want it to have a long and endearing affect and this year is no different. Well, actually I misspoke as this year is quite unique, not to mention different and difficult. It has indeed been tricky, complicated by all the recalls due to lead paint. I was rather leery and fearful of purchasing an item that could later prove to be deadly. With the discovery of more harmful toys daily, the “do not buy” list continues to grow, as did my fear of picking the next one that would likely be added to the list. Yes, the search for a “perfect toy” has proven to be treacherous and never-ending. We racked our brains, scoured the catalogs and considered many books and games. We strive for a product to be entertaining and educational — one that will give their little brains a workout. It would also be grand to be able to get them away from the television, as we do what we can to help reduce the number of up and coming couch potatoes. (Anything we can do to help produce a new generation of thinkers as well as a lead-free generation, we will do …) My family also looks for one more additional feature which we delight in, but their parents hate to see come into their home — if the gift produces sounds, it is a bonus for us! One year we gave my 3-year-old nephew a riding fire engine complete with sirens and horns. He and we loved it, but my sister did not think it was funny. After a couple of weeks, she disposed of the battery that powered the sound. I was left to picture my small nephew riding his silent engine through the house. Fear not, however, as we were not daunted by her reaction. We have continued the tradition with her second son. Last year, we gave him a police motorbike loaded with all lights and sounds. Again he and we loved it. It was a thrill to view his delight, and funny to watch my sister’s displeasure as she probably fought the urge to choke me. This year, after much searching, I believe we have found a winning choice. I look forward to the reactions from children and parents alike, as we sit back in our quiet abode enjoying the holiday season. Happy holidays to you all! Leticia Espinales can be reached at:
