The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City School District held a groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 15 for the replacement campus of Ray Corbett Junior High School. The new school site is located at 12000 Ray Corbett Drive near FM 1518 at Lower Seguin Road in Schertz.

More than 100 community members, district employees and students attended the event, which began with a performance by the Corbett Honor Band under the direction of Zacarias Serrato. Superintendent Dr. Belinda Puskta welcomed all guests and gave an overview of the school project.

This replacement campus is the first junior high school that SCUCISD has built in more than 30 years. The school covers nearly 190,000 square feet and sits on a 35-acre site.

The school is being built for 950 students with a core capacity of up to 1,200. The design includes a centralized entrance that will enhance school security and state-of-the-art computer labs and fine arts facilities. The site will also have a full-competition football field and a six-lane, all-weather track. The $52-million campus, being built under Proposition I of the 2006 bond program, is scheduled to open August 2009.

School board President Scott Harrod and Corbett Principal Jay Muennink also addressed the audience. Sherman Corbett, son of Ray Corbett, shared fond memories from when his father was principal of the school previously named O’Henry Middle School. Sherman was joined by his brother Raymond, sister Mona, mother Shirley, wife Julie, and his son, Mason, for the ground breaking.

Members from the Wilder Intermediate School Student Council presented Muennink with a time capsule to be buried at the new school site. This year’s fifth- and sixth-graders at Wilder will be the first seventh- and eighth-graders to attend the new school in 2009-2010.

Facilities and Construction Director Wade Hawkins was on hand to introduce the school’s project team that includes: AG|CM Inc.; Garza Bomberger and Associates, Joeris General Contractors, R-S-C-R Inc., Silber and Asso-ciates, and Civil Engineering Consultants.

The event concluded with a small reception and the Corbett band playing “Shac-kelford Banks (Tale of Wild Mustangs)” as a tribute to the school’s mascot, a mustang.

The district’s next groundbreaking ceremony will be for Schertz Elementary School at 5 p.m. today on the property adjacent to the current school site.
