 Erin Kitten and SVHS Principal Chris Trotter Erin Kitten, a Smithson Valley High senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal’s Leader-ship Award (PLA) scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. SVHS principal Chris Trotter announced the nomination, which places Kitten in the national competition. One hundred national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive a college scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $12,000. “Every year the nominees for the Principal’s Leadership Award are just phenomenal, and Erin Kitten is no different,” SVHS Principal Chris Trotter said. “She is an excellent example of what a true student leader embodies and deserves to be commended for her excellence in the classroom and community.” High school principals from across the country were able to nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. They were also required to write an essay. Kitten has been a four-year member of student council and is serving as spirit master this year. She was president of the junior class and was prom committee chairperson last year. She has been a member of Peer Assistance Leadership, the National Honor Society, and Rowdy Row during both her junior and senior years. Kitten was also on the girls cross country team as a sophomore, and earned academic all-district honors. Kitten plans to attend Texas A&M University and study business. The NASSP promotes the intellectual growth, academic achievement, character development, and leadership development through its programs. NASSP administers the National Honor Society, the National Junior Honor Society, and the National Association of Student Councils.
