Local hydrogeologist Ron Green will make a presentation on “Helotes Creek and Its Importance to the Edwards Aquifer” at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The presentation will be made in the open field across from Floore Country Store. The presentation will include a general discussion of the Edwards Aquifer, the nature of Helotes Creek, and the importance of Helotes Creek to recharge of the Edwards Aquifer. The presentation will include a short field trip of Helotes Creek in Helotes. The presentation is free and open to the public. Children and families are welcome. In the event of rain, the presentation will be postponed until a future date.

Texas Cooperative Extension will be conducting its first annual Green Industry class next year and now is taking registrations. This class is open to all green industry professionals who want to increase their knowledge in all aspects of the green industry: lawn care and maintenance; landscape management; and retail and wholesale nursery sales. Learn how to leverage your skills and update your knowledge with the most recent best practices available from state and local experts in their respective fields of horticultural services. Deadline to register is Jan. 15 and classes run every first and third Friday of each month from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. from Feb. 1 to June 20 at 3355 Cherry Ridge, Suite 208, San Antonio. San Antonio Sports and Social Club is now registering teams and individuals for its spring 2008 softball and flag football leagues. Both leagues are co-ed and open to men and women age 21 or older. Registration ends 11 p.m. Feb. 22. Visit: www.sanantoniossc.com.

Government Canyon Natural Area is taking reservations for a Jan. 5 event, “Guided Hike to the Protected Habitat.” Members of the Recreation and Education Committees of the Friends of Government Canyon will lead a hike to the Protected Habitat starting at 8:30 a.m. Participants must be at least 14 years of age and physically able to hike 12 to 13 miles over rugged terrain. Reservations are required.
