Citing rising fuel and petroleum costs and a contract renewal with Waste Management Inc., the city of Leon Valley has announced rising garbage collection rates that began at the first of this year. Residential service rates will increase, but not at the rate shown on bills delivered to residents in the latter part of December. Waste Management is correcting the amount quoted for the optional 90-gallon waste cart from $8 a month to $4 a month. The cart, which is optional, contains wheels. The residential charge for the normal two curbside trash pickups and one recycling pickup per week is now $13.50 a month. Residents have the option of providing their own garbage cans, with or without wheels, at the limit of up to five 30-gallon containers as long as no single container exceeds 60 pounds. Rate comparisons for other local entities indicate rates run from $18 a month in San Antonio, $17.50 a month in Universal City and $20.64 a month in Converse.
