LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Will GVTC make donation to Bulverde/Spring Branch library? PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 January 2008

I read with interest the article about the establishment of the GVTC Foundation for charitable organizations. As a member of GVTC, I think it’s great that the foundation pledges to help good causes in this entire area served by GVTC.

Congratulations to Tye Preston Memorial Library for being the recipient of GVTC’s donation of $100,000. The Tye Preston Memorial Library certainly deserves vigorous community support. I do, however, have a question for GVTC: how much money have they donated to the Bulverde/ Spring Branch Library, also working hard to serve this area?

Although GVTC has not announced a gift for the Bulverde/Spring Branch Library, I expect GVTC will bestow an equally generous donation.

Both libraries are building to meet rapidly expanding needs of this fast-growing part of the county. At Bulverde/ Spring Branch, the library is so crowded that I recently asked the staff how use of the library has grown. They read me a surprising statistic: from December 2001 to December 2006, the number of library patrons increased an amazing 256 percent. Many of the newcomers are families with children and seniors who are retiring to this area. No wonder they are running out of room.

The need is great. The time is short. Bulverde/Spring Branch Library will soon finish the new building. But the new building can’t adequately serve patrons if it doesn’t have enough shelves to hold the books, or enough chairs, tables, and equipment for those who come to use it.

I’m looking forward to the day that Bulverde/Spring Branch Library can also say, “thank you” for their $100,000 check from GVTC.
