Erin Gardner has two games remaining in her high school basketball career.

There will be no playoff berths or any plans to play at the next level.

When the final buzzer sounds in the District 28-5A game with Jay on Feb. 6, it may be a little sad for the Clark senior to see it end. At the same time, Erin Gardner will count her blessings.

Although she never experienced the post-season, basketball has still been a pleasant experience from beginning to end.

“It has been a lot of fun playing here,” said Gardner, who plans to attend University of Texas. “When I leave here I’ll remember the fun times I had with the girls. They all have had a big impact on my life.”

Gardner has made an impact on her teammates as well.

Point guard is her No. 1 position, but this season she has also been called on to help at the post. Through it all, Gardner has made her presence felt, averaging 12 points and 6.7 rebounds.

Mostly, Gardner has been an inspiration.

“I’ve seen her leadership from the beginning,” Clark coach John Paul said. “At the beginning of the year, I asked our players if they had to be in a bunker in time of a crisis what two players would they choose. Erin was on every list. That is why she is our team captain.

“I didn’t have to appoint her captain, because everyone already looked at her that way.”

Her teammates make it clear she’s their MVP.

“I consider her our biggest leader,” senior Megan Falcon said. “She is fun to be around and makes us feel comfortable.”

“Erica has been a great leader,” added junior guard Anastasia Perez. “She is calm and very selfless. She is a hard worker.”

Said senior Christi Oswalt: “I have played on teams with Erin since sixth grade. She is a friend and a great teammate. She also brings a special humor to the team. She’ll do something really goofy when you’re not expecting it. It helps us loosen up.”

Gardner’s leadership has been especially valuable this season. With 10 new players, the Lady Cougars (4-22, 2-11) have taken their lumps. What has made it tougher is 10 of the league losses were seven points or less.

Still, Gardner approaches each game like a district championship is on the line.

“’I’ve always tried to stay positive,” Gardner said. “I have tried to get to know my teammates and be a good leader.”
