Chasing away business

Editor:

Two weeks ago we went to Circuit City in Windcrest to buy a new computer monitor. Great store, great location, great operation. They are closing this location in June.

Why? We have lost Target, J.C. Penney’s, Sears furniture and Wal-Mart; Home Depot will leave soon, I have been told. Why?

Why does the Windcrest EDC find it so necessary to build and develop new properties and centers when the existing centers are beginning to look like ghost towns? We just lost the optical store on Walzem Road, Bill Miller’s closed its restaurant; and we are being told we need more property developed in order to bring more revenue into town.

From my perspective, the only revenue that is being obtained is by our lawyers, for whom I believe our city council has requested the set aside of $100,000 for future legal expenses regarding our administration’s efforts with the flea market, now in the old Wal-Mart location, for the engineers and architects working on the new development projects, and contractors working on said projects.

My question to our administration, and Mayor Jack Leonhardt is why did we spend $4.5 million on street gravel that we all still have to sweep out of our houses and look at piled up on Crestway Drive like a garbage dump and our revenue, intended for upkeep and maintenance of the city, is being squandered on “Alice in Wonderland” ventures?

I would like an answer; a response in the Windcrest Newsletter in simple, non-convoluted phrases would be appreciated.

Pool sources for reservoir

Editor:

I would like to make a suggestion to the cities of Converse, Live Oak, Schertz, Universal City, etc., although I am certain that it will be ignored. It’s worth a shot, anyway.

This past year saw a horrendous drought in the southeastern part of the country, with equally horrendous forest fires in the west. These phenomena are almost certainly going to continue due to the climate change that is taking place unless, of course, one want to stick one’s head in the sand while humming “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”

By contrast, we were lucky, and that is all it was; just “luck,” in having a lot of rainfall. This fortunate weather will not continue for long. In fact, it may be the last time we see so much rain for quite a few years.

My suggestion is that all of these small towns surrounding San Antonio should build an enclosed reservoir of water that is off limits, even in times of mild drought, for when we experience — as we will, sooner or later — uncontrollable fires that will consume our property Such a structure might just tip the balance in such a situation.

As for where I live, Live Oak, I doubt that this idea will be taken up. Instead, I expect a couple of years from now or so, another bigger police station will be built
