Huebner Creek’s beauty despoiled PDF Print E-mail

Huebner Creek wends its way for half a mile along the west side of Wellesley Manor subdivision. It’s normally a dry creek. Occasionally it overflows its banks, briefly inundating its flood plain and, in so doing, providing the life blood (water) to the trees and plants that live there.

Ancient live oaks spread their convoluted limbs. Arrow-straight cedar elms reach for the sky. Scattered mountain cedar struggle to compete. Deer meander through. It’s like a long, narrow park, a place for leisurely walks, a good sweat-provoking run or a picnic lunch – a God-given retreat from the worries of the world.

Alas, there is no path. Waste debris litters the ground. Some residents of the nice houses fronting on Wellesley Manor Drive throw their junk over their back fence into the flood plain. One thinks of a society matron in a silk dress while three inches of soiled undergarment trails beneath the hem of her shirt.

Take a walk along Huebner Creek. Anyone living in Wellesley Manor subdivision can make the roundtrip from home. Start at the bridge at Whitby Street and go north, or follow the path west from the cul de sac at the north end of the street and go south at the dry creek. Wear sturdy shoes. There are four exit routes in addition to the ends. They are wide concrete sluices at regular intervals. They carry away runoff water from the subdivision above.

Call or write me to lay plans to bring this lovely Eden in our midst back to par.

Sincerely,
Chet Lummen
