Statesmanship in Helotes PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 31 January 2008
I would like to commend the City Council of Helotes for demonstrating statesmanship at the Jan. 24 City Council meeting. At issue was a fundamental question on governance and the fiduciary responsibilities of the City Council and the mayor. Successful governance of a municipality requires balance between the actions and oversight of expenditures by both City Council members and the mayor. Achieving this balance can be a challenge, particularly when perspectives differ among the elected officials.

I would especially like to commend Aldermen Richeson and Eckhardt for their understanding that their responsibility is to ensure that the citizens of Helotes be afforded the opportunity to clearly understand what city revenues are expended and the process in which the expenditures are made.

Bringing this issue to the attention of the citizens of Helotes and their fellow elected officials was potentially divisive and could have resulted in a contentious dispute. However the eloquent and diplomatic explanation by Alderman Richeson effectively raised the importance of this governance issue and at the same time offered a reasonable and sensible path to resolve the issue.

The citizens were well served by the actions of our elected officials who acted at this meeting to place the interests of the citizens above all else.
