The Boerne High School women’s basketball team claimed an undisputed district title Feb. 5 with a victory at Kennedy in its last league game of the season. Boerne finished the district campaign with a 9-1 record while improving to 21-9 overall.

Along with the District 27-4A title, the Lady Hounds also secured a bye in the first round of the state playoffs. Boerne will play either Austin Lake Travis or New Braunfels Canyon in the area round, with the exact time and location pending the results of this week’s bi-district competition. The UIL window for area play runs from Feb. 14 to 16.

First-year Boerne Coach Jonathan Tate says the bye gives his players a chance to catch some welcome rest after a grueling regular season and to polish their game before the playoffs begin.

“We’re trying to get rested and work on shooting and some light conditioning, and we’ll try to work out some things with our offense,” Tate said.

Boerne had an option to schedule a warm-up game, but Tate decided against it.

“I didn’t think it would benefit us this year,” he said.

The Kennedy Lady Rockets would probably agree that Boerne is already in post-season form. After a bit of a slow start, the Lady Hounds ran away with an 88-49 win.

“Once we got rolling, the Kennedy game was pretty good,” Tate said. “Everyone played well. Kalie Hatch came off the bench and scored 20.”

Caroline Field scored 16 points before heading to the bench, and Rebecca Davis made it three Boerne players in double digits with 12 points. Tate says Davis is nearly 100-percent again after missing several district games with an injured foot.

Stephanie Dyal just missed double figures with nine points. Morgan Riser added eight, Salina San Miguel scored seven, Megan Burns had six, Hillary Lumpkins dropped in three, Camilla Nolen chipped in two and Kendall Siess and Emery Canavan each hit a free throw.

Boerne’s junior varsity won its contest with Kennedy and finished the year with a perfect district record. The freshman team won as well, and finished its season with a single loss.
