Photos by Mike Reeder By Mike Reeder View Sports Writer The District 27-4A Champion Boerne Greyhounds were still waiting to see who they would meet in the area round of the UIL basketball playoffs as the View was going to press. The Hounds will play either Pflugerville Connally or Del Valle, depending on which team survived Tuesday night’s bi-district contest. Either team would present a challenge. “They’re both athletic and they’ve both been in the regional finals the last three years,” Boerne Coach Stan Leech said. “You can’t get any better than that.” The area game will be played Thursday, Friday or Saturday, with the exact date, time and location to be worked out between the competing schools. The Greyhounds tuned up for the playoffs Saturday with a 54-52 win over West Campus in a warm-up game played at South San. Boerne improved to 30-5 on the season with the victory, which saw three Hounds score in double figures. Power forward Robert Moore led the Hounds with 15 points, center Chuck Thornally pumped in 11 and forward Hunter Simmons added ten. The Greyhounds had secured a first round playoff bye and clinched the district championship after defeating Fredericksburg in their final home game of the season. If anyone had wondered how the Hounds would respond to their first and only district loss at Kerrville, those doubts were erased just minutes into the Feb. 12 game against Fredericksburg. The Hounds hit the floor with guns blazing, blowing away the Billies’ like a hurricane smashing into a thatch hut. The final score read 86-57, but it wasn’t even that close. Moore and Thornally owned the paint, shooting guard Daniel Rogers rained down long range bombs and Simmons played like a buzz saw on both ends of the court. The Hounds jumped out to an 8-0 lead, with Moore scoring three times from the charity stripe, once on a layup off a feed from Simmons and once from three point range. The Billies stalled on their first possession, but steals by Simmons and Moore made it clear the Hounds would not be denied. “We beat them the way we needed to beat them; especially the way they approached the game,” Leech said. “We went man-defense and got the lead, and once we had the lead they had to play us. We busted out on them from the beginning.” “We just pounded the ball inside,” Moore said. “That opened everything up. We were mad about Kerrville and came out here ready to play.” “We like getting big leads and then playing our way,” Simmons said. “We were fired up and played real well as a team. It was parents’ night and we really wanted to win.” Boerne wrapped up league play with a 9-1 record and the district title. Fredericksburg, the defending district champion, missed the playoffs in fourth place with a 4-6 district record. |
