Special to the Southside Reporter Center for Mexican American Studies and Research at Our Lady of the Lake University will host “An Altar for Emma,” March 7 through 9. The show tells the inspiring story of local labor leader and OLLU alumna, Emma Tenayuca, who is best known for advocating for workers’ rights in the 1930s. The multimedia performance piece, written by Beva Sanchez-Padilla, incorporates actors, live music, video and even audience participation. Student actors and musicians will perform. OLLU’s Center for Mexican American Studies presents the event during Women’s History Month. Tenayuca was an influential activist who led a historic struggle to better the lives of the poor. Yet she has not received widespread attention for her efforts. The play will also be featured at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center on tomorrow and Saturday. An outdoor performance is scheduled for Sunday at Plaza Guadalupe on the West Side. The March 7 and 8 shows begin at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. March 9. The show will be at OLLU, located at 411 S.W. 24th St., in the Providence Hall, West Social Room. Call 434-6711, ext. 2735.
