Emcee Rick Cavender led the crowd in a standing ovation for outgoing Alamo Height Independent School District Superintendent Jerry Christian. By Carole Miller
San Antonio society had a case of the blues this week. But when you are talking about the social elite of the Alamo City, blue is, after all, the new black. The first “blue” event was a benefit for the blue and gold. The Alamo Heights Foundation’s Roundup for Excellence honored retiring superintendent Dr. Jerry Christian and featured local celebrity (and AHHS alum) Rick Cavender, delicious food from board member Richard Peacock and Paloma Blanca and raised more than $90,000 for the foundation. Yee-ha! Theresa Abreu, Rachel O’Reilly, Genevieve Martin and James Gibbons enjoyed Neiman’s Blue-tinis at an invitation-only event. I saw all the cool kids from school, including chairs Clayton and Robin Hudnall and Bill and Nancy Maloy, Greg and Laurel Grassmuck, Fred and Lori Tips, Stephen and Kelly Cavender, Scott and Brandi Hollingshead, Triple and Joy Fuhrmann, Jim and Lisa Wolff, Bryan and Laurel Stuckey, Paul and Sarah McSween and Richard and Jennifer Sparr having a great time that night.
My hosts for the evening were Phillip and Anne Bagnall (parents of super pole vaulter Andrew Bagnall). Also at our table were Bill and Karla Keahey, Andy and Julie Allen, Patrick and Tricia Tobin and Andy and Kim Anderson. At the end of the evening Dr. Christian spoke briefly and thanked everyone for the “wonderful ride.” The crowd of more than 800 responded with a standing ovation that almost brought him to tears. David and Kathy Nicolson shopped with Neiman Marcus General Manager Tom Wensinger at Neiman’s latest soiree. The next stop on my blue streak was the always-swanky Neiman Marcus for a “fashionista’s toast to a new season.” General Manager Tom Wensinger and Neiman’s Public Relations Director Xiltalt Herrera threw a hip, happening party featuring “blue-tini” cocktails, music, models and mucho shopping.
Seen power shopping during the event were Dore Koontz, David and Kathy Nicolson, Alona Housley, Tiffany Rose, Audrey McKinney, Kirsten Thompson, Theresa Abreu, Rachel O’Reilly, Genevieve Martin, James Gibbons and CityPages Publisher Bert Gallagher. And, last but not least, a social column about all things blue would be incomplete if there weren’t some blue bloods in it, right? So the next event was at the Terrell Hills home of San Antonio “royalty” Edward and Nancy Steves. Mule Team President Paul McSween. And among the royal subjects at the party were other local blue bloods Weezie Steen (who recently hosted a party at her home for President Bush), Stephanie Cavender, Dick Tips, Bob and Betty Kelso, Michael and Candace Humphries and Stanton Bell.
The party was hosted by Nancy Steves and Vangie Flores. These ladies are heading up the semi-annual “Trinkets and Treasures” event at the San Antonio Museum of Art on Saturday. This semi-annual estate sale is a fantastic place to find an eclectic mix of merchandise of every size and price with all proceeds going to the museum’s general operating fund. Make plans to go check it out! (I know I’ll be there!) Until then, don’t be blue … I’ll be back next week! Weezie Steen, Stephanie Cavender and Kim Lewis gathered for the Trinkets and Treasures kick-off cocktail party.
J.C. Rubiola, former NSAT social gal Courtney Schultz, Mellen Hunter and Chris Schultz joined the Roundup for Excellence.
