Leon Valley Mayor Pro Tem

The battle is far from over to keep an elevated/toll road out of the city of Leon Valley. Recently the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority was sued again for its alleged failure to follow federal law.

Some Leon Valley residents may believe that the toll road battle is over and that we have won because the ARMA announced last year that there would be no elevated toll road on Bandera Road. Some believe that we have already lost because there is a road being built atop Bandera Road.

Both groups are correct.

If the ARMA keeps its word, then we have won the battle to keep an elevated toll road from being built over Bandera Road. However, the ARMA has never given the city of Leon Valley any written confirmation that an elevated road will not be built.

Yet, to some, we have lost the battle to keep an elevated roadway out of Leon Valley.

Years ago, city leaders helped create the situation we have today. (Read Mayor Riley’s column for historical information about the “flyover” or “mega-ramp” being built in Leon Valley today.) I would suspect that no one knew that the Evers Road exit on westbound Loop 410 would be permanently closed as part of the mega ramp construction. This weekend, it will be closed permanently.

Both groups bring the same important message: As a community, we must remain vigilant to prevent further harm to our neighborhoods and our city.

Businesses along Bandera are suffering because of the construction and the continuing uncertainty about the toll road. The faces of businesses are changing, and we must work together to make our community one for living.

Anyone driving down Bandera Road on a regular basis can see the way the construction has and new roads can affect our community. I think it is clear that the effect is bad.
