Judson BPA students attended conference Top business students from Judson High School attended the Business Professionals of America 2008 State Leadership Conference in Dallas last weekend. Eight Judson chapter members joined more than 2,000 other conference delegates from across the state to participate in state level business skill competitions, general sessions, and the state officer candidate campaigns and elections. Judson students competed in the following events: Advanced accounting (Michael Cheng), payroll accounting (Gregory Lee), advanced interview skills (Danielle martin), presentation management team (Krizia Aurelio, Jackie Martinez, Alyssa Perusquia, and Fenny Tan), and human resource management (Lauren Tarnow). BPA is a national organization for middle school, high school, and college students preparing for careers in business and office occupations. Marion students do well at BPA meet Fifteen Marion High School’s Business Professionals of America chapter seniors qualified for the BPA state leadership conference last weekend in Dallas. Their qualifications are based upon their recent performance in the area/regional competition at Seguin High School. The qualified members are Sara Basha, presentation management/individual; Hailey Bolner, integrated office applications; Kelsey Brawner, fundamentals of XHTML; Megan Murray, fundamental word processing skills; Lauren Craddock, legal office procedures; Martha Posey, graphic design promotion; Amanda Stroh, advanced word processing skills; Mackenzie Langemeier, basic office systems and procedures; Tiffany Riddle, advanced word processing skills; and Jennifer Riedel, medical office procedures. Team winners included: Presentation management team, Riedel, Fernando Chavez, Craddock and Brawner; administrative support team, Kenneth Bornmann, Basha and Stroh; and video production team, Candace Krause, Posey and Kalynn White. Local students nominated for Coca-Cola scholarships Twelve high school students in the greater San Antonio area, including two from the Metrocom, have been selected as semifinalists for the 20th anniversary class of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, a joint effort of Coca-Cola Bottlers across America and the Coca-Cola Co., is one of the largest corporate-sponsored, achievement-based scholarship programs of its kind in the United States. Local semifinalists are Ricardo Corona of Judson High School and Kaleisha Stuart of Wagner High School. The students rank with approximately 2,000 seniors who are in the running for $3 million in college scholarships that the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will award this spring. Students are selected to advance to this next phase based on the level of academic excellence, leadership and achievement demonstrated in school and community activities. Randolph students do well in academic meet Using their technology skills, a team of 20 students from Randolph Elementary School answered 100 challenging questions that require higher level thinking skills to place second in Texas honors in the 38th Knowledge Master Open academic competition. Randolph’s 20-member team scored 670 of 1,000 possible points in responding to the question that covered 13 curriculum areas. Team members included Thomas Hughes, first grade; Deion Locklear, second grade; Zachary Lacross, Robert Meeks, Samantha Seaman, Mikayla Watson and Owen Zilinski, third grade; Tim Bebow, Tyler Blount, Kyler Carlson, Taylor Gates, Zachary Green, Nicholas Haines, Kerri Hesko, Cheyene Murray, Sam Otto, Sadie Peloquinj, Emily Poole and Rebecca White, all fifth-graders. Carlson was team captain and Gates was keyboard operator. The Knowledge Master Open is designed to stimulate enthusiasm for learning and recognition for academic accomplishment. The Randolph team was schedule to compete again March 12. Athletic booster clubs receive donation Athletic booster clubs at Clemens and Steele high schools recently received a $10,000 donation from the Virginia A. Richard Fun and the San Antonio Area Foundation. Virginia and the Roy Richard family have been longtime supporters of the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City School District. SAAF is a publicly supported philanthropic institution. Randolph students tapped for Boys State Three Randolph High School juniors have been selected as delegates to the annual Boys State, which will be held in June 7-13 at the University of Texas in Austin. Christopher Crabbe, John Rippetoe and Jacob Ritter were chosen by the Randolph faculty to represent the school. Attendees must demonstrate strong leadership abilities, have outstanding scholastic achievement, be of good character, possess a competitive spirit and have the ability to work well with other. The trio will be sponsored for the event by Universal City American Legion Post 667 because Boys State is sponsored statewide by the American Legion. The seven-day seminar offers training for delegates in the ideals and objectives of American government. They are taught to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society and their obligation to help keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations. Teacher to be recognized for natural resources education The Texas Wildlife Association Foundation and San Antonio Livestock Exposition Inc. announce the opportunity for one deserving area teacher to be recognized for his or her contributions and earn a financial award for their school in the amount of $2,500. The $2,500 school “scholarship” will be awarded to the school in recognition of the winning teacher’s use of innovative techniques and curricula to promote natural resource literacy among their students. Applicants must complete an application that is available through the Texas Wildlife Association. Applications are due by April 1. The winner will be announced by May 1. Local students make dean’s list Thirteen Metrocom area students were recently named to the dean’s list at Texas Lutheran University for the fall 2007 semester: Katrina Chauret, Garden Ridge area; Rudy Fernandez, Kirby area; Sarah Hale, Allen Hallett, Rebekka Kniura and Ryan Detry, all of Cibolo; Robert Cooper, Converse; Robert Hawkins, Jonathan Zahradka, Kelli Roberts, Courtney Wilkins and Ryan Michales, all of Schertz; and Marlena White of Universal City. The dean’s list honors students who earned a 3.5 to 3.99 of a possible 4.0 semester grade point average with a minimum of 12 graded hours in the past semester. Trustees focus on diversity Area school board members such as Edd White of the North East School District joined counterparts from across Texas Feb. 21-23 in the third session of Leadership TASB. Participants gathered as part of class activities in the yearlong education leadership study program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards. The session’s theme was “Envision New Possibilities through Embracing the Differences.”
