Today The Cellular on Patrol Program of the San Antonio Police Department offers classroom sessions training volunteers to identify suspicious activities and other components that may suggest crimes in neighborhoods. Used Book Sale Saturday The Friends of the Maverick Library will hold a used book sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Maury Maverick Jr. Branch Library, 8700 Mystic Park, San Antonio. Most books are priced at $1 or 50 cents, with funds raised going to support the branch library. Past donations by the friends have included furniture, a reading circle rug, a color printer, a laminator, book carts, display cases, office supplies, and refreshments for reading groups and other programs. The group works closely with library staff to meet any needs not covered by the branch’s budget. Through book sales and other fund-raising activities, the friends have raised more than $6,000 for the library since it opened in 2006. The friends also provide volunteered help with various library programs. Anyone interested in supporting the library may attend friends meetings at the library at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday each month. Membership applications are available at the library. Donations of gently used books for the sale are accepted on an ongoing basis, except during the book sale, at the library circulation desk.
