Steele Elementary School was the 2007 Casey “Elementary School of the Year” winner.

The San Antonio Independent School District elementary is also is a nominee for the 2008 award.

The 2008 award will be announced during the 19th National Youth Crime Prevention Conference (NYCPC) and International Forum this weekend in Miami.

Each year, Youth Crime Watch of America presents Casey awards to schools that exemplify academic excellence and for enhancing their community’s quality of life.

“We are excited about our recent, and second consecutive nomination, and are proud and honored to be representing SAISD during our stay in Florida,” said Maria Elena Garza, Steele Elementary School principal.

“This is the result of great parent and community support. Steele is so fortunate to have such an extraordinary, supportive and passionate staff that embrace the belief that kids always come first.”

Recently, Steele’s 21-member Bronco dance team was invited to perform at both the Walt Disney World Resort and as a return engagement for NYCPC.

“The 2008 NYCPC theme is ‘Building Champions,’ and I can’t think of a better school to personify this amazing adventure,” Terrence W. Modgin, executive director for Youth Crime Watch of America, wrote Garza in his letter of invitation.

“As recipient of last year’s ‘Elementary School of the Year’ we believe your group models such great opportunities for academics, service and leadership.”

In tribute to the host city of Miami the fourth- and fifth-grade squad will don colorful beach garb as they dance to the song “I Believe.”
