Three generations of Gardenias: Susie Kargl, Grace Forney and Heather Finkle
Story and photos
by Carole Miller

On the menu this week were petits fours, grilled chicken salad and crepes. That’s right … the ladies who lunch are back, baby!

The ladies of the San Antonio Gardenia and Musical Club Coronation started things off with a luncheon at the San Antonio Country Club to honor Dee Ann Simpson. Pattie Heydenreich and Harriette Burns served as co-chairs for the event.

Nancy Torgerson and Veronica Boldt, chairwomen of the upcoming Night in Old San Miguel Gala, were also there with Margie Rust, Alice Kelly, Marjorie Murphy, Tobin Simpson, Suzie Kargl, Heather Finkle and Grace Forney.

Then those gals from Kappa Alpha Theta sorority sponsored their annual bingo party. This year’s event, “Bolsas y Bingo,” was chaired by Diane Shaw and Christine Tyng and featured some seriously fabulous prize packages! All the proceeds from this afternoon of fun and games with the gals went to benefit Child Advocates of San Antonio, the chosen philanthropy of the San Antonio Thetas.

Between the delicious lunch and rounds of bingo, I spotted many San Antonio socialites including Ann Word, Patty Halliday, Suzanne Cavender, Elizabeth Swanson, Susan Bauer, Tracey Bennett, Caroline Decherd, Margaret Mitchell, Arlene Kinsel, Laura Zachry, Anne Rochelle, Dore Koontz, Lisa Sechler, Kristin LeVoyer, Meggan Leonard, Julie Dubrof, Debbie Chesney, Sharon Seal, Kathryn Dehlinger, Wendy Atwell and Sarah Steves.

And at my table, Jennie Gibson almost won a prize for tablemates Anne Campbell, Lara Thompson, Susie Feldman, Cara Cleveland, Jennie Gibson, Carolyn Thornton and Alicia Parker. B-I-N-G-O!

After that, I joined Cancer Center Council President Rose Marie Banack, at the “Live, Laugh, Learn, Lunch with Cancer Center Council” event honoring Volunteer of the Year (and fellow University of Georgia alum) Helene Merren.

After featured speaker Dr. Dan Shapiro inspired everyone in the crowd, I got a chance to talk with KSAT anchor, emcee and cancer survivor Leslie Mouton, UTSA Director of Advancement Mary Jackson, former Volunteer of the Year Barbara Haley, Courtney Schultz, Dorothy Basso and Laura Schumacher. I also spotted UT Health Science Center Dean Dr. William Henrich, Lyn Selig and Louise Beldon.

I do declare, the ladies who lunch really outdid themselves this week and “served up” several scrumptious afternoons. Thanks, gals!
