Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation is hosting a breast cancer screening at The Neighborhood Place, 3014 Rivas, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Twenty free or low cost mammograms are available for those who qualify. Uninsured and low-income women between the ages of 40 through 65 qualify. To set up an appointment, call 704-4100.

VFW Post 9186 is sponsoring a spring dance, from 8 p.m. to midnight. It is located at 650 VFW Blvd. There will be music by “Los Uncos.” Donations of $5 per person is requested. Parties of 20 or more can reserve tables by calling Oralia at 337-4728.

Saturday

Safe Harbor Church will have a “Youth Explosion Concert,” from noon to 7 p.m., at 3126 S. Flores St. The concert will feature hip-hop, rock and rap music. Food and drink will be served from noon to 3:30 p.m. The concert is to help youths say “no” to gangs, drugs and violence. Call 289-4117.

San Antonio Central Library is having a seminar called “Are You Ready to Buy a Home?” It will at 2 p.m., at the Central Library Auditorium, 600 Soledad St. Learn basic tips on qualifying for a loan, determining what you can afford, planning for property taxes, and anticipating down payments, plus a lot more at Central Library’s Registration is available online at www.sanantonio.gov/library or call 207-2500.

South San Community Center rummage sale will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at South San Community Center, 2031 Quintana Road. Parking spaces for the rummage sale are available for $10 a space. Call 927-1640.

Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, 10750 Pleasanton Road, will host a free program, “Words for Birds / A Reading of Poems and Prose About Nature and the Environment,” from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Event starts with a birding walk and delves into a reading of original works by authors in nature writing. St. Joseph Catholic School, 535 New Laredo Hwy, will be having a rummage sale, from 8 a.m. through 2 p.m. Spots are available for $ 10 per space. Bring your own table. Centro Cultural Aztlan presents the 20th annual Lowrider Festival, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., at Mateo Camargo Park, Highway 90 at Callaghan Road. The show includes food, games, children’s activities and live music. Admission is $10 adults, free for children age 6-under. Call 432-1896.

Monday

Highland Park AARP, Chapter 1045, will have a meeting at the Highland Park Lutheran Church, 705 Hammond and S. New Braunfels Avenue. It will be in the social center at 1:30 p.m. Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson will be the speaker.

Tuesday

Spay-Neuter Assistance program will offer low-cost neuters and spays for cats and dogs at Neighborhood Place Edgewood, 3014 Rivas St. Pets should be dropped off by 7:30 a.m. in a pillowcase or carrier. Call 673-7722.

Wednesday

Media workshop at UTSA. Learn how to write a press release to promote your business, product or event. The workshop will be 11:30 to 12:30 p.m., at UTSA Downtown, 501 W Durango Blvd., Room 2.316 in the Durango Building. Journalists who live and work in your community will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and offer advice on getting media coverage. The event is sponsored by the San Antonio Small Business Development Center and San Antonio Association of Black Journalists. Upcoming

Pecan Valley Neighborhood Association will have its monthly meeting April 10, at 7 p.m., at Pecan Valley Elementary School. The main focus of the meeting will be the H-E-B McCreless Center. Highland Social Club, 2929 South W.W. White Road, will be having a “Casino Night,” April 12. Cost is $15 per person. Holy Name Parish will have its annual spring festival on April 20. It will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Comanche Park No. 2.  Festivities will include a barbecue beef and sausage meal starting at 11 a.m. Cost is $6 per meal. There will be an auction starting at 2 p.m., a raffle at 6:30 p.m., bingo and entertainment provided by the Wilson County Car Club. AARP is sponsoring free tax preparation assistance at different locations through April 15. Aides are available 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays at H-E-B Plus, 6816 S. Zarzamora St. and Commander’s House Senior Center, 647 S. Main Ave., Wednesdays at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Alcohol Chemical Treatment Series (ACTS) has a class meeting every Thursday, from 7 to 8 p.m., and a support group meeting afterward from 8 to 9 p.m. ACTS is a support program to enable people who want to maintain a drug-free lifestyle.
