The Alamo Heights softball team has a little unfinished business this year to take care of.

It stings a bit when a team you beat twice on the way to the district championship turns the table on you and wins the bigger prize, the state championship, and the Lady Mules are determined to make amends.

They did just that with a 4-2 victory over Boerne this past Friday night

Alamo Heights put the pressure on early, batting around the order in the first inning and posting a 3-0 lead that ultimately was enough to polish off the Greyhounds once again.

Senior third baseman Kim Rohlf’s two-run blast over the left field fence with two outs helped set the tone for the night and the Lady Mules held on for the win.

“I think it was part of it,” Rohlfs said. “It was nice … a good way to start. It was fun!”

Both teams lost to Kerrville Tivy in the opening round of district play and were fighting to avoid a second district loss.

The Lady Mules have been battling the injury bug since the start of the season. With the two top pitchers, Maddie Anes and Callie Caesar, out of the rotation with injuries, Coach Tim Stuewe called on sophomore Natalie Weyand once again to take the mound against Boerne.

Weyand responded admirably in just her second start of the season, striking out seven and keeping the Greyhounds at bay most of the night.

“They’re our rival so we all really wanted to beat them,” Weyand said when asked about the importance of the game. “And since they’re state champions, there was even more incentive to go out there and beat them.”

Alamo Heights loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning and again in the bottom of the third but were unable to punch across another run until Amber Sotello drove in Amber Brightwell with a double in the sixth inning.

Weyand retired the Greyhounds in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the victory.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Stuewe said of Weyand’s emergence. “When opportunity arises you step up and meet the challenge and she’s done that. I’m proud of her.”

“They (Lady Mules’ defense) made some real key plays,” Stuewe said. “A lot of it starts with hitting your spots pitching and making them hit your pitch. We got the job done there and played solid behind her and that’s what it takes – a team effort.”

The Lady Mules will have finished the first round of district play with a Tuesday game against Memorial as this goes to press and take on Kennedy on the road on Friday to start the second half.
