As part of its year-long 20th anniversary “shell-a-bration,” the Water Street Oyster Bar, located at 7500 Broadway in Alamo Heights, has created a culinary delight in honor of the St. Mary’s University Fiesta Oyster Bake, with a portion of all sales going to the St. Mary’s University Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Oyster Bake Chowder, created by Michael Gambino, Water Street’s food and beverage director, is a variation on traditional chowder, prepared with plump gulf oysters, whole cream, spinach, bacon, garden white pepper and an array of seasonings. A bowl is $5.50 and a cup is $3.50. The special runs through the end of Oyster Bake on April 19.

“Michael has really outdone himself,” said Thurman Love, owner of Water Street Oyster Bar. “We are very happy to continue our partnership with St. Mary’s again this year and to help the university raise even more money for scholarships.”

Water Street customers can also register to win a special Fiesta Oyster Bake prize package for four that includes free admission tickets, food and beverage coupons, official t-shirts and other Fiesta Oyster Bake merchandise.

To give one final push to this fundraising effort, Water Street will host its second annual oyster shucking contest Wednesday, featuring local celebrities, media and elected officials who will also get to enjoy Oyster Bake Chowder and the wine while they compete.
