Peeking in the front window of Pagoda, the latest addition to the hot shopping spots along Broadway, is like looking through a kaleidoscope of color and style. Just the slightest tilt of your head results in a complete change of scenery – from colorful Oriental to muted European, conservative elegance to groovy contemporary. The eclectic mix of vintage and modern design makes Pagoda a must-stop-in for any home-owner with a passion for style. So, from where does Pagoda glean its funky style and impeccable taste? From its three owners, of course! Pagoda is the “dream realized” of three lifelong Alamo Heights’ friends, Belinda Nixon, Bonnie Chumney, and Francie Mannix. “We all bring a little something different to the table,” Nixon said. “And that’s why it works.” Belinda, an antique dealer, makes twice-yearly trips abroad in search of fabulous, can’t-live-without-it pieces, while Francie scours neighborhood estate sales across South Texas for the perfect finds. And Bonnie, a decorator and long-time art dealer, is the expert at pulling it all together. “We love the hunt,” Mannix agrees. “We share ideas, and we’re always on the look-out for something fun and unique.” Pagoda prides itself on offering something for everyone, and its traditional designs mixed with the latest cutting-edge necessities, offers just that. “We want everyone to feel welcome,” Chumney said. “Come for inspiration, come to browse, or come by to visit!” Whether you’re looking for a traditional French farm table from Argentina, an English secretary, a mid-century mirrored console, or a contemporary Lucite accent piece, Pagoda has it all. And they’re ready to help you expand your decorating horizons. “Mixing styles and periods is what makes decorating fun and interesting,” Belinda states. “Some of our most recent best sellers have been the paint-by-numbers pieces from the 1940s and 1950s. The price-points are excellent, and they are just fun pieces to collect. We really try to have a little something for everyone … from the grand dame antique enthusiast to the high school senior working next door.” “I love Pagoda. It’s very eclectic, and I love the friendly atmosphere,” agreed Sissy Rigney, a long-time friend and customer. “You always see someone you know here. I recently bought a funky chandelier for my daughter, and today, I’m shopping for me!” And the selection is ever-changing. “We always have new things,” Mannix said. “You can’t see it all in just one trip.” Certainly, a few trips to Pagoda are just what the shopper ordered. Pagoda is located at 5160 Broadway next to Broadway Daily Bread.
