The 55-minute program was for students on the SPC President’s Honors List, the SPC President’s Honor Roll and the honor roll. “We’re successfully growing this into an academic event for an elite group of students who take ownership of their school on their special night,” said Alberto Guerra, honors convocation committee coordinator and math instructor. “We’re developing this ceremony into a nice event where families see loved ones receiving honors. It’s a great way to encourage our students to do as well or better in their future academic endeavors.” About 600 people attended the event. Olga M. Hernandez, a San Antonio Independent School District board member and former St. Philip’s student gave the keynote speech. “Olga’s speech was down to earth,” said Daniella Garcia, a St. Philip’s stenography student who walked the stage to receive a certificate during the ceremony. This was the first time St. Philip’s held its honors convocation at night, Guerra said. “Scheduling at night allowed us to bring the support system together for these outstanding students, their college, their community and their family members,” Guerra said. “The convocation was an attendance success.”
