Special to the Herald SEGUIN — High school students have the opportunity to experience college life and earn college credit at the same time this summer by attending Texas Lutheran University’s Lone Star Scholars Academy. When you go to college, you enter a whole new world: new room, new roommate, new classes, and new expectations. It can be a tough transition. The college search is about finding more than just the right major, but the right fit and the right experience. LSSA gives you a taste of the future, and lets you “try on” the college experience, so that when the future arrives, you’ll be ready for it. Attending LSSA gives academically-gifted students the chance to see what college life is like while still in high school by taking a college-level course and living on the Texas Lutheran campus. Each LSSA student participates in courses taught by TLU faculty or area educators. Courses offered this year include “Performing Stories,” which combines methods from everyday storytelling and narrative theater, teaching students to tell stories using basic acting techniques; “Creative Writing, Creating Change,” where students will have the chance to find their voice through writing stories; “Comedy and the Art of Film,” a class that explores the history and theory of Hollywood comedy; and “Forensic Anthropology,” which takes students into the world of a forensic scientist in the criminal justice field. In addition to taking classes, the students stay in college residence halls on campus in Seguin for two weeks and participate in field trips, fun evening activities and a group community service project. LSSA students have access to university facilities, including the library, computer labs, bookstore, snack bar, swimming pool, racquetball and tennis courts and the fitness center. LSSA is divided into two sessions, June 15-21 or June 22-28. Students can choose to attend one or both of the two sessions. Students accepted into the academy must have completed at least their freshman year in high school and have successfully taken the PSAT or rank in the top half of their class. Students must also receive a strong recommendation from their guidance counselor or teacher in order to participate. Tuition, room, board, books, and all associated activity fees and materials costs are included in the price of $750 per session. A $100 deposit refundable through May 19 must accompany your application. Need-based scholarships ranging from $100-300 are available.
