Tax vote for ‘commoners’ Editor: I read Angela Lehane’s March 27 letter about Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign. She specifically mentioned the subject of tax cuts with the implication that she already knew Sen. Obama’s position and implied that the “commoners” will suffer if he is elected. We realize that Sen. John McCain originally voted against the Bush tax cuts. In the Wall Street Journal, he said that he originally voted against the cuts “because of the disproportional amount that went to the wealthiest Americans.” Now he says that all the cuts are OK and he will make them permanent. When was he telling the truth? What will he really do? Maybe he now has to pander to the Republican right until the election is over. That seems to be working. As for the Democratic candidates, both Hillary and Barack have already voted to make the middle-class tax cuts permanent (Senate Concurrent Resolution 70, 3/13/08) and their respective platforms mirror that decision, so it would appear that they agree with you that at least the commoners should keep more of their money. A wonderful part of this country is that we all get to vote our perspectives and preferences. For me, that comes down to whoever wins between Hillary or Barack. For the author of the letter, it comes down to Sen. McCain or Barney. Let’s have a good campaign based on facts as well as personal choice and then we all can support who wins in the end. Larry Mooney Cibolo resident Kusek right for Live Oak Editor: I have seen Loretta Kusek for City Council signs in yards around Live Oak and I am happy to see that she is getting support for her council bid. When she was on the council before, she was very active and made sure we all knew what was happening with the city and our tax dollars. I have lived in Live Oak for over 20 years and know that Loretta is a person that is really concerned about the well-being of our city. Loretta is a senior citizen who supports the seniors with the latch-key program as well as the children with the playground program. I hope all the new residents in Live Oak support her, too. Denese Huntsberry Live Oak resident Don’t like it? Leave Editor: Thank you President Bush. If Mr. Chauret is so unhappy with “my” government, I suggest he forfeit his citizenship, buy a one-way ticket to a country that supports his socialistic value and, of course, give up his government retirement check that allows him to live so well in this country that has given him so much. I will buy the one way ticket if he will just leave. His comment about “future generation” ... maybe it’s time we push personal responsibility and not expect one generation to suffer and do without, so a future one can enjoy life doing nothing. I thank God I have been able to enjoy a comfortable life during President Bush’s presidency. It has been wonderful to know a moral, honest, sensitive man has occupied my White House these past years. Look out, America, when you elect a democrat in November. Watch your paychecks pay for healthcare, food, homes, cars, etc., for the lazy and the illegal. Be careful what you wish for. Kaye Williams Live Oak resident Live Oak needs change Editor: Live Oak residents are being asked to vote for incumbent city officials and return them to office in the May election. These are the same city officials who have not been able get a park built on the west side of Toepperwein Road, even though it was bought/paid for by KB Homes many months ago. If the city manager does not have this project completed in its entirety by election day, I urge all voters to not vote for any incumbent seeking re-election. We have better people in Live Oak, let’s use them. Nick Davies Live Oak resident
