Chris Riley Leon Valley Mayor On Feb. 22 at the annual Earthwise Living Day, Vista Fibers representative Zach Waters presented the city of Leon Valley a certificate for our city’s outstanding achievement in recycling for 2007. Total tons recovered: 374.22. Paper tons recovered: 273.52. The recycling effort we undertook in 2007 saved 4,650 trees, 1.9 million gallons of water, 16,411 pounds of air pollution, 1,121,432 kilowatt hours of electricity and 903 cubic yards of landfill space. These figures will now become the baseline for our El Verde by 2020 initiative. One of our goals for 2020 is to increase curbside recycling participation to 90 percent. This reflects a participation rate of around 40 percent, so imagine how much we will save when we double our efforts over the years. Recycling pays off for the environment, and the city general fund receives half of the sales proceeds of the recyclables. Congratulations to the Earthwise Living committee for its efforts in educating the citizens. Please call me at 684-1391, ext. 219, if you are interested in serving on this volunteer committee to help in these efforts. Crystal Hills Park Survey: We need your input on the new 50-acre park to be opened jointly between the city of San Antonio and Leon Valley, at the end of Shadow Mist off Grissom. May 10 election update: One the ballot for the May 10 election, you will be voting in the Leon Valley race for mayor, the Bexar County election to extend the visitors sales tax and for candidates in the Alamo Community College District board of trustees. For the first time, the city of Leon Valley will be conducting a joint election with Bexar County. This means you will only have to go to one polling site to be able to vote in all three elections. However, polling places in Leon Valley have changed. Early voting will be conducted at the Kinman House, next to the Leon Valley Library from April 28 to May 6 (including Saturday and Sunday) and at other county early polling sites, but not at Leon Valley City Hall. On Election Day, May 10, only two Leon Valley precincts will vote at City Hall (2061 and 2143) Precincts 2111 and 2134 will vote at Marshall High School and precinct 2112 will vote at Leon Valley Elementary. On April 17, two public forums for the Leon Valley mayoral candidates will be held: the Leon Valley Chamber of Commerce at noon at Outback Steakhouse, Loop 410 and Evers Road; and the League of Women Voters at 7 p.m. at the Leon Valley Conference Center. Public meeting on 410-Bandera floyovers: On Monday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at the Leon Valley Conference Center, TxDOT representatives will be present to give an update on the Bandera Road flyover construction project.
