There’s not much that fazes this year’s Alamo Heights softball team. The Lady Mules cleared another hurdle on their quest for the District 27-4A championship by avenging their only district loss, a 1-0 squeaker to Kerrville Tivy back on March 20. It didn’t come easy, but as they have throughout the season, the girls came through again in the clutch. Realizing they control their own destiny in the race for the district crown, the Lady Mules scored five runs against Tivy in a fifth-inning outburst to overcome a 4-1 deficit to come away with a 6-4 victory. Starting because of injuries to two pitchers, Alamo Heights sophomore Natalie Weyand found herself in a 4-1 hole going into the third inning. Weyand bounced back strong, showing the kind of determination that has been the hallmark for the Mules this season. She shut out Tivy for the last five innings, and the Alamo Heights' offense backer her up with five runs in the fifth for the 6-4 win. “We feed off each other really well,” said Callie Caesar, who had been the team’s No. 1 pitcher until she broke a finger on her right hand, and has since been contributing with her bat and her enthusiasm. “When a person gets a hit, everyone builds off it and we get a vibe going.” Caesar, who is playing with a cast on her hand, led the offensive comeback with a 2-for-3 effort that included two RBIs. Head coach Tim Stuewe was proud of how his team came through in the clutch. “It was a nice win,” Stuewe said. “We played like we are capable of tonight. It’s good to see that they believe in each other, have a lot of faith and they never give up.” The Lady Mules followed the Tivy game up with a 16-3 shellacking of Fredericksburg Friday in five innings, showing the team is definitely headed in the right direction. After another key game against Boerne this week, they’ll finish off the district schedule Friday at Memorial. In District 27-4A, Alamo Heights is currently is first place with a 7-1 district record and 20-10 overall record. Boerne is 6-2 district and 11-9 overall. Kerrville Tivy (5-2, 13-14), Fredericksburg (2-4, 13-14), Memorial (0-5, 5-17) and Kennedy (0-6, 6-15) round out the district standings. Alamo Heights is also 13th overall out of all schools in batting average at .350, with 254 hits at 725 at-bats.
