Water: Boerne has 3 excellent sources of water: surface water with Boerne Lake, GBRA water, and our 9 city wells. Our water is consistently rated superior. We must always be proactive in protecting our water supply and the Cibolo Creek corridor. A main area of concern today is the water treatment plant. The existing Esser Road plant is now near capacity, especially during periods of heavy rains. Currently, Site II on Old San Antonio Road seems to be most economically feasible in the long run. We will also add a fourth source of water when this site is completed, with the addition of the availability of reuse water. The new Water Recycling Plant will also have an added benefit to the community with the ability of having outflow water added to the Cibolo which will help maintain a constant flow, thus adding more tourism appeal. We must be proactive in addressing storm water run-off and its hazards. Transportation: A regional plan for mobility is required. Boerne has a Mobility Plan and the county recently released its Mobility Plan. We must work together as a unified community in designing a regional plan for mobility. Adding more parks and interconnected hike/bike trails benefits and encourages people to walk our community instead of using their cars. Additional surface parking is needed to meet the demand. Pedestrian safety is being threatened every day. We continue to develop and strengthen a positive connection with TxDOT. TxDOT holds the key to many areas of community and regionaldevelopment. We have the option to “take control” of some of the current TxDOT maintained highways that run through Boerne, such as Highway 87.This is an area that certainly deserves more study. Planning a Better Boerne: According to Boerne’s master plan, it is projected that Boerne could double its size by 2020. We all know that this will dramatically impact areas such as our unique “small town” character, our ability to service our citizens, our tax base (positively!), and our demographic composition. As a councilwoman and a teacher, I can tell you that this is already happening. We must be diligent in being proactive, not reactive, in preserving our current and future citizens’ quality of life. Boerne is going to grow and we need planned growth that will increase our tax base while maintaining the Hill Country Charm that we so cherish. Personal statement: “I believe that I am uniquely qualified for the position of city councilmember for the following reasons: Leadership: I believe my work in education and community service prepared me as a leader in government and that I have brought and will continue to bring balance to City Council. One of the platforms of my first campaign was to increase the collaboration between the city, county, and BISD. This focus, with the addition of the Kendall County EDC and CCGCD, continues to be a part of my current campaign. During my two years on City Council, I have seen this collaboration grow between all of these major entities, and sensed a real spirit of community. Community does not stop at city limits, county marker, or school district. “In the two years that I’ve served on the council, I have proven that I’m an independent voice who is thoughtful and balanced in her decisions. “I have served on the Tourism Council, Facilities Committee, and on the Esperanza Negotiating Team. It has been a very busy two years, and it seems that it is becoming a common occurrence to have a “major issue” on our plate at any given moment. I have confronted these issues with diligence and thoughtful resolve. “Good manager for growth (vision for Boerne) - Growth is inevitable and is essential for a healthy community, but it must be managed in order to provide benefits to our community while maintaining the very charm that has enticed so many of us to move here. I served for eight months on the Esperanza Negotiation Team and believe that my support of the Development Agreement between the city of Boerne and Marlin-Atlantis is a win-win situation for both entities. The city will receive monetary benefits in the areas of road improvement and construction of the new Wastewater Recycling Center. We will also receive utility revenue, based on a new out-of-city rate that will benefit the citizens of Boerne. “I am founder and executive director of Keep Boerne Beautiful, founded in 2002. KBB is a 501c3 whose mission is to empower the citizens of Boerne, through education, to make a difference in their community by promoting awareness and beautification efforts in the community that is so attractive to us. I have been working with KTB and KAB for over 15 years. This experience allowed me to work with many other cities that are experiencing rapid growth also, especially Texas and the entire Southwest U.S. Aesthetics is important to all of us.”
