Corbett choir receives UIL honor The Corbett Junior High School Honor Choir received its first-ever UIL Sweepstakes award March 7 at Fox Tech High School. The choir received a First Division rating in both concert and sight-reading contests. Natalee Najera directs the Corbett choir. Steele students get accepted to culinary program Steele High School students Amanda Enriquez, Jasmine Davis, Jennifer Campos and Lance Taylor have been accepted to the culinary program at the prestigious Johnson & Wales University. Hope Herrington is the culinary arts teacher. Orientation set for prospective RFISD students An orientation session for all prospective pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students for the 2008-2009 school year and their parents is set for April 30 at Randolph Elementary School The Kinder Roundup will begin at 6 p.m. in the Early Childhood Building at the school, and babysitting will be provided for younger siblings. Parents wishing to use the babysitting service should call the school office at 357-2345 to make reservations. Pre-K students who are eligible for enrollment must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2008, and reside on Randolph Air Force Base. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2008 and must reside on RAFB or be approved under that the district’s transfer policy. SCUC students attend Explore UT event Gifted and Talented students in grades kindergarten through sixth attended Explore UT at the University of Texas in Austin on March 1. Approximately 96 students from the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City School District attended the event, along with G/T teachers and about 59 parents. Explore UT, the “biggest open house in Texas,” showcased the excitement of education and research at UT Austin. Selecting from more than 400 activities, students, teachers, and parents had the opportunity to be involved in many age-appropriate, educational learning experiences. These activities invited students to experience the intellectual life, technological advances and rich resources of a world-class university. Steele students tapped for Air Force camp Michael Flores, a junior third-year cadet, and Julia DeCook, a sophomore second-year cadet, from Steele High School have been selected to attend the Air Force Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp at the University of New Mexico this summer. A total of 428 worldwide AFJROTC units nominated 944 cadets to this highly selective camp. In the announcement issued by the Air Force JROTC headquarters at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, officials said: “The selection process mirrored Air Force promotion boards as well as ROTC scholarship boards. Selectees represent the top half of 1 percent of over 100,000 AFJROTC cadets.” Lodge honors Lamar winners Randolph Lodge No. 1268 awarded this year’s Lamar Award of Excellence for Personal Achievement to these Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City School District teachers and students in early March. Recipients receiving a medal and certificate were Michael Mary, Clemens High School teacher; Suzi Mitchell, Steele High School teacher; Donna Dean, Clemens student; and Kasey Lynn Staggs, Steele student. Mirabeau B. Lamar was the second president of the Republic of Texas. He has been called “the Father of the Texas public school system” for his leadership in establishing quality public education in Texas. Lamar was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, known then as it is today, for its strong support of excellence in public schools. Area students earn scholarships Security Service Federal Credit Union recently awarded $1,000 college scholarships to Roosevelt High School senior Anthony Fisher and Clemens High School senior Kanesha Hines. The credit union formally recognized Fisher, Hines and 10 other recipients from the San Antonio area for their accomplishments in a ceremony at the Doubletree Hotel. Fisher plans to study radio, television and film at the University of Texas at Austin. A member of Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society, he was chosen to serve as a delegate on the Human Rights Council of Canada for a model United Nations of San Antonio. He is also the section leader of his school’s all-region band. A student in the International Baccalaureate program, Hines plans to study biomedical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and hopes to go to medical school to become an anesthesiologist. Hines is the treasurer of several school clubs including: Imani Multicultural Club, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and her senior class. Clemens BPA competes at state leadership conference Sixteen Business Professionals of America members from Clemens High School competed at the state leadership conference March 5-8 in Dallas: Heather Speck, Allie Petrequin, Christian Tristian, Andrew Winfield, Bryan Tan, Drake Rogney, Eric Tan, Alex Rodriguez, Ben Goos, Deidra Sullivan, Allie Dunsmore, Richard Braud, Elijah Tramble, Kanesha Hines, Ruben Carrion and Josh Reus. Speck placed fourth in graphic design promotion, Goos placed fifth in video production, and Tramble, Braud and Sullivan placed fourth in small business management team.
