Put on your running or walking shoes and get ready to participate in the ninth annual Run for the Hills scheduled for May 3 at 8 a.m. and beginning at the Bulverde Senior Center.

The event is co-sponsored by BSC and the Bulverde/Spring Branch Chamber of Commerce. There will be a cash prize for the overall top male and female, as well as awards for the top three male and female runners based on age group.

The race is sanctioned by USA Track and Field. Registration blanks are available at BSC, the chamber office and numerous locations throughout the area, as well as online at runawayclub.com, or at bulverdechamber.com. The registration fee is $15 for those signing up before next Monday. All registered runners and walkers will receive a free T-shirt to commemorate their participation. So come out and walk or run if you can, or just join the excited crowd of spectators for the morning.

There will also be a health fair in the center, providing health and wellness information to our community. Volunteer workers are needed to assist in many different areas at this event.

Don’t forget to pick up your tickets for the STAGE performance on May 1 benefiting the Bulverde Senior Center. The production is “Defiance” by John Patrick Shanley. This riveting new work by Shanley is about power, love and responsibility, and follows two U.S. Marine officers, one black and one white, on a collision course over race, women and the high cost of doing the right thing.

Purchase the $16 tickets for an entertaining evening. We appreciate being selected for this benefit performance and thank the STAGE board of directors for honoring us in this manner.

The rummage and craft sale held April 19 was a very successful event. There were all sorts of attractive crafts available for purchase as well as bargains in the rummage sale. Thanks to the many volunteers who made this event such a popular activity.

We are proud of BSC member, Mal McClinchie, who participated in the San Antonio regional senior games on April 13. He won a silver medal in the javelin event; fourth place in the shot put; and sixth place in the discus. His efforts qualify him for the Texas finals and he is hoping to do as well in that competition.

There were plenty of smiles and appreciation as the Encore group provided several skits after the Monday luncheon this week. This friendly group meets every Monday at 1 p.m. and is open to all who would like to participate in presentations and skits.

An art group for those interested in sketching and painting is being formed. It will meet on May 2 at 9 a.m. Bring a project to work on, or your sketchbook and enjoy the camaraderie of this group. This is intended to be an activity group, not a class.

Please note the following scheduled activities coming soon: PALS Senior Night Out on Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.; Attorney Larry Shallcross will speak on inheritance law after the luncheon April 28; and a pancake breakfast is scheduled for May 10 from 8 to 11 a.m.
