For the first time in school history, the Boerne Greyhound tennis team is sending two doubles teams to the state tournament.

Men’s doubles partners Grant Gandy and Cameron Davis punched their ticket to state with a 7-6, 6-2 regional finals win over the men’s team from Lake Travis last week at the Blossom Tennis Center.

Sisters Katie and Christi Mount also earned a trip to the state tournament with a second place finish in girls’ doubles. The state tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Lakeway Country Club northwest of Austin.

Times had not been posted as the View went to press.

“They handled the pressure very well,” Boerne Tennis Coach Joey Cantu said of his state qualifiers. “It’s tough to get to state from our region, but our guys earned their way to state.”

Gandy and Davis lived up to their number one seeding at the Region IV tournament with four consecutive straight set wins. They advanced to the finals with a 6-4, 6-2 semifinals win over New Braunfels.

“They played awesome to win that match,” Cantu said. “Some of the best tennis I’ve seen all year.”

The Mount sisters racked up three consecutive straight-set wins before falling to New Braunfels in the finals match, 2-6, 5-7. That set up a playback match with Alamo Heights for a spot in the state tournament.

“We knew the situation when the day started and were not surprised to see Heights in our way to state,” Cantu said.

The Mount sisters dropped the first set 0-6, but stormed back to take the first five games of the second set before closing it out 6-2.

They opened up a 3-0 lead in the third set before Heights cut the lead to 3-2. That was as close as it got. The Mounts won the final three games and the match with another 6-2 finish.

“We talked about the way we felt last year when we lost that playback match, and how we did not want to have that same feeling,” Cantu said. “They played well and their hard work paid off.”

While only the two doubles teams advanced to state, the rest of the Greyhound team also put on an impressive performance, with seven of the ten entrants reaching the regional semifinals.
