Special to the View

Seven family members spanning four generations participated in the Home-Baked Pie Contest at the Agricultural Heritage Museum in Boerne on April 19.

Judy Burr of Boerne organized the family affair that included the oldest member, Betty Parrish, 84, and the youngest, Chelsea Garcia, 11. All of the family wore red T-shirts for the event. Laurel Bey came from Silver City, New Mexico, and won first in both categories.

Bey intends to further her schooling to become a chef. Kimberly Burr came from Albany, Texas, and baked a raisin and pear pie. Niece Nicole Garcia came from Round Rock and baked an avocado pie to take third place in the most unique category.

The whole family baked until the wee hours of the night and got up early on the day of the event to bake some more. For these girls, family fun is not “pie in the sky”, it’s “down on the farm” and America’s favorite food.

The pie judges were Kendall County Sheriff Roger Duncan and District Judge N. Keith Williams.

They enjoyed their job of tasting all of the wonderful pies. Organizer was Ollie Hight. Winners received awards and pottery from Bergmann Lumber Company.
