Vote ‘yes’ on Cow Creek measure

Editor:

If you are concerned with the quality and quantity of water in Kendall County, you need to take action to help the Cow Creek.

The Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District (CCGCD) is the agency charged with protecting our groundwater, and on May 10 they are asking us to support a ?-cent tax (rate) increase. This will cost the average homeowner less than $1.25 per month. Now there are very few taxes that I like, but I consider a vote for this one incredibly important.

The CCGCD needs a stable source of funding. Almost half of their small budget comes from new well permits and water fees, a very uncertain and unreliable source. The Cow Creek needs funds for aquifer research, for the creation of more monitoring wells and the real time equipment to use them properly (this is most important in dry years like this), and a number of other worthwhile projects.

Groundwater is a limited resource with great demands for it. Developers want to grab it for their subdivisions, farmers and ranchers want it for irrigation, established communities need it for their residents, and for many rural families with their own wells, it is their only water source.

The best way to prevent over-development of our water supply and protect its quality for the future is to support the CCGCD. Early voting has already begun at the courthouse in Boerne with the general election set for May 10.

For most Kendall County voters, this will be the only item you are asked to vote on, but it is extremely important that you go to the polls. If you value your water, this may be the most important vote that you cast this year.
