The Alamo Heights High School girl’s softball is taking it one game at a time. Friday's game against Pflugerville Hendrickson's Lady Hawks had Mules fans on the edge of their seats, as Natalie Weyand was successful getting out of two innings with bases loaded, with a shutout 2-0 victory in San Antonio. Saturday, the Lady Mules headed to Austin to face the Lady Hawks on their home turf in the best-of-three series in the second round of Class 4A regional play. The spirit and energy was high during the cool and sunny Saturday afternoon. The Lady Mules scored early in the game, with one run in the first inning, as Amanda Brightwell singled and was brought home on a double from Amber Sotelo. After leaving runners on base for nearly every inning, the Mules were not able to score until the game was forced into extra innings after a 1-1 tie after seven innings. Heights stormed into the eighth inning with singles from Amanda Brightwell, Carey Nowacek and a solid double from slugger Amber Sotelo. Brightwell had an amazing slide under the tag at home plate to score the first of four runs in this fateful inning for the Hawks. With the bases loaded and Kim Rolfs at bat, Hendrickson pitcher Carollin Hall was called on a balk and advanced the runners for another Heights score. Rolfs finished off the inning with a single that brought in two more runs. Leadoff pitcher Callie Caesar was successful in keeping the Lady Hawks to one run in the second inning with Weyand taking the mound in the sixth inning to finish the eight-inning game with no additional runs. The Lady Mules face Dripping Springs in the next round of play with games at 7 p.m. tonight and Friday at Canyon Lake High School with game three, if necessary, at 10 a.m. Saturday. |
