Friday Northside Independent School District elementary and middle school students have an early release day. Elementary school dismissal is 11:50 a.m. and middle school dismissal is 12:30 p.m. Saturday Leon Valley Market Days will be held 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Leon Valley Community Center, 6427 Evers Road. The event, which features vendors of crafts, handmade clothing and foodstuffs, is held the second Saturday of each month. The annual Letter Carriers Food Drive will collect food donations left by your mailbox and deliver it to the local food bank. Grocery bags sponsored by The USAA Foundation and H-E-B have been delivered to each household to encourage participation. Join the Friends of Government Canyon Volunteers on the second Saturday of every month for a guided, 5- to 7-mile hike on one of the many trails at the State Natural Area, 12861 Galm Road at 8:30 a.m. The trails are rough and rocky, so wear boots or sturdy hiking shoes. Wednesday Villa de San Antonio senior living community, 8301 North Hollow, hosts a Senior Health and Fitness Fair 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring free health screenings including arterial flow screening, blood pressure screening, blood sugar screening, body fat analysis and massage therapy as well as additional presentations. May 16 The American Red Cross Golf Classic at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort starts registration at 11 a.m. with tee time at 1 p.m. All proceeds from this event funds disaster preparedness in South Central Texas. May 17 The Maverick Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Maverick Library, 8700 Mystic Park, San Antonio. Those interested in supporting the library may attend meetings at the library at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday each month.
