Saturday Leon Springs Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p. m. at the Leon Springs Dance Hall, 24135 W. Interstate 10, in the parking lot (Boerne Stage Road exit, across from Rudy’s Barbecue). Vendors offer plants, herbs and a variety of edibles, from fresh produce to honey, nuts, breads, jams and jellies. Call Mario Obledo Jr. at (210) 823-3393 with questions regarding the Leon Springs Farmers Market. Sunday Bicyclists can take part in the Fair Oaks Afternoon Ride, starting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Fair Oaks Ranch Center. Mileage varies. Call (210) 698-6625 for details. Monday Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 688 will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at the Boerne cemetery on May 26, beginning at 11:30 a.m., to honor the men and women who served our country and who gave their lives in service. Everyone is welcome to attend. The program will be fairly brief, but it would still be a good idea to bring a lawn chair. As a community service, veterans will collect old, torn, soiled, or badly faded American flags, which will be respectfully disposed of. These flags may be also dropped off at Coldwell Banker Swope Realtors at 1112 S. Main or at the Boerne Chamber of Commerce, 126 Rosewood, for pickup by the veterans. For further information, contact Chuck Allen at (830) 249-3766. May 28 The “Cavender Chevrolet 2008 Live Music Series at The County Line” benefiting the San Antonio Food Bank is held every Wednesday night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the County Line Bar-B-Q restaurant at 10101 Interstate 10 West (between the Wurzbach and Huebner Road exits). New this year: an opening act by a popular band—those on the cusp of being feature artists—will play from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. before the headliner comes on at 8 p.m. to play for two hours more. On May 28, Bob Schneider & the Bluegrass Massacre will perform. Jason Eady will be the opening performer. Concerts are held on the restaurant’s open-air patio. The live music series is free; however, all customers are asked to make a food or monetary donation to the San Antonio Food Bank. The 2008 Texas Folklife Festival will be held June 13 to June 15 on the grounds of UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures. Event organizers are issuing a call for volunteers to help staff the event, serve on organizing committees, assist in festival operations and help with set-up and take-down. “We All Belong” is the theme for the 37th annual Texas Folklife Festival, a three-day celebration immersing guests in the cultures, ethnicities and traditions of Texas. The festival features authentic foods, crafts, demonstrations, music and performances. Volunteers are asked to attend an orientation session, 6 to 7 p.m. on May 28. It takes nearly 1,000 volunteers to make Folklife a success. By working a minimum four-hour shift, a volunteer earns a wristband good for admission to all three days of the festival. In addition to volunteers for festival shifts, pre-event volunteers are needed to serve on the Grab Bag and Equipment committees. Committee members are asked to work four hours a week, now through the festival. Last year, 834 civic volunteers donated a total of 3,486 hours to the festival. To volunteer for the Texas Folklife Festival, call (210) 458-2216 or visit www.texasfolklifefestival.org. May 29 Humane Society SPCA of Bexar County will have a “cover dog unveiling and yappy hour” 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 29 at The Shops at La Cantera. Society representatives will announce the winner from the San Antonio magazine cover dog contest. Event includes food, beverages, prizes and more. Free and open to the public. Call (210) 226-7461 The Boerne Concert Band will perform a concert in honor of U.S. veterans and in memory of those who died. The concert will be at 7 p.m. May 29 at Main Plaza in Boerne, weather permitting. If it is raining, the event will be held at Boerne Middle School North auditorium on Johns Road. The concert is free and everyone is invited. June 2 Boys and girls ages 8 to 13 will be launching rockets they build in the Shoot for the Stars Rocket Camp, set for the Boerne Community Center starting June 2 and going four days from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. This summer camp is a perennial favorite for young engineers. Students learn how mathematics explains the world of rockets and aeroscience through simple lessons in Newtonian physics and rocket flight. By designing and building their own rockets, students learn the laws of rocket stability, fluid dynamics, and aerodynamics. On the final day of camp each student gets to actually launch the vehicle they designed and built. The course includes all supplies needed to build and fly rockets. Family and friends are welcome to view the launch on the final day of the camp. To sign up, visit www.clubed.net or call (830) 895-4386. All summer children’s activities are listed at www.hillcountrykids.net. June 3 Boerne Village Band, the oldest German-American Band in the world, offers Abendkonzerts (evening concerts) in the summer months.
