Comal County Judge Danny Scheel on Monday declared the drought a disaster and issued an executive order banning the use, sale and transportation of all fireworks.

“I support Judge Scheel’s decision,” said County Fire Marshal Wayne Ellington. “It’s extremely dangerous right now, and we had the support of every fire department in the county.”

Ellington said the ban applies to all Class C small fireworks sold over the counter, including firecrackers and sparklers.

The ban was effective for a period of 60 hours, after which it was extended by the governor. “The ban will remain in place until the drought is over,” Ellington said. “But we are also asking that people use caution when doing things like outdoor barbecuing and welding.”

The Bulverde City Council passed a resolution Tuesday banning fireworks within the city limits.Councilman Michael Sorbera said he thought the resolution was not needed since the city is already under a burn ban.
