Frank Ramirez, a geotechnical engineer with Arias and Associates, removes a five-foot core sample from the base of Olmos Dam July 16. The Bexar Country Flood Control program is in the midst of an extensive project to inspect the integrity of Olmos Dam. Cores are being taken from six different drill sites in the dam to allow them to see how the initial structure and new structure are interfacing and instruments are being placed in the base of the dam to allow for recording the movements of the earth below the dam and the dam itself. Olmos Dam, completed in 1927, was one of two major features of a flood control plan instituted after the 1921 flood that killed at least 50 people and devastated downtown San Antonio.
