While coaches in some other sports have the luxury of time to make roster decisions, Boerne Chargers Head Volleyball Coach Troy Errington will be moving quickly out of necessity. Even though tryouts just got under way Monday, the first varsity scrimmage will be held Friday at Alamo Heights. The first game will be played at 7 p.m. Tuesday at East Central.

“We’re just a few days away from our first game,” Errington said. “We have to have tryouts but we also have to get ready to get going.”

This year’s squad will need to learn on the run. Last year’s Greyhound team was loaded with freshmen and just missed the playoffs for the first time in several years. This year’s inaugural Champion Chargers team will also be young, with just four seniors and three juniors on board. The rest will be sophomores.

“We’ll be relatively young again,” Errington said. “I’ve been seeing them at camp during the off-season, so I know the talent’s there. We’ve just got to put it together as a team.”

Along with new players, Errington is also breaking in a pair of new assistants.

“We’re just getting to know each other right now, so we’ll see how that works out,” Errington said, laughing, before adding that the new-look uniforms and school colors are fashion winners.

“Me, I like it, because I don’t look good in purple, so I like the navy blue,” said Errington, tongue firmly planted in cheek.

The new high school gym also wins his seal of approval.

“The new high school is phenomenal,” he said. “The gym is incredible, so everything is really good.”

Fans will get their chance to pass judgment on the new facilities when the Lady Chargers play their first home game against MacArthur Aug. 19.
