Today

The Schertz Historical Preservation Committee will meet at 6 p.m. in the conference room of the Schertz City Council Chamber, Bldg. no. 4, 1400 Schertz Parkway in Schertz. The public is invited.

The Guadalupe County 4-H will hold its information fair from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the County Extension Office, East Live Oak and Crockett streets in Seguin. The fair is open to anyone. Guadalupe County Master Gardeners will meet at 7 p.m. at the Texas AgriLife Extension Bldg., 210 E. Live Oak in Seguin. Liz Palfini, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will present a program on “Unique Interactions Between Plants and Animals.” Call: 830-379-1972.

Friday

The Americana Indian/Western Art and Jewelry Show will be held noon-8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday at the Live Oak Civic Center, 8101 Pat Booker Rd. Admission is free. The civic center will also host the Alamo Coin Club’s coin show 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $1.

Tuesday

Spay-Neuter Assistance Program will offer low-cost procedures for dogs and cats at Live Oak Animal Control, 8101 Shin Oak Dr. Pets should be dropped off by 7:30 a.m. in pillowcase or carrier. Call: 673-7722.

Windcrest Animal Hospital will offer low-cost vaccinations for dogs and cats 6 to 7:30 p.m. at H-E-B, 300 Olmos Drive at McCullough Ave.

Aug. 28

The San Antonio SCORE Chapter No. 164 will hold its “Smart Start on Marketing Your Business!” workshop from 2-4 p.m. at SBA’s San Antonio district office at North Park Corporate Center, 17319 San Pedro, Building 2 Suite 200.

Aug. 30

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center will hold a blood drive from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Schertz, 1065 E. Live Oak Road. The center is in need of B-negative type blood. Anyone 17 years of age or older, weighing 110 pounds and in good health can donate blood. Contact: roger. Sept. 2

Registration for free GED preparation classes will be held from 9 a.m.-noon for day class, or from 6-9 p.m. for night class, at the Northview Support Services Center, 401 W. Byrd Blvd., in Universal City. Students must stay for the entire three-hour registration session. Any students 16 or 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Sept. 6

The monthly breakfast at the Kirby Senior Center, 3211 Alan Shepard in Kirby, runs 8-10 a.m. and will be prepared and served by the Guadalupanas from St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Meal includes scrambled eggs, sausage, waffles, biscuits with gravy, grits, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. Cost: $3 presale, $3.50 at the door; $2.50 for children under 13. The public is invited.

Sept. 11

A “911 Emergency Preparedness” open house is being conducted from 6-9 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 13201 Forum Road in Universal City. Attendees will learn how to prepare for emergency situations: living through an emergency; water purification; food storage; and 72-hour kits; hear Katrina survivors share their amazing experiences. Free, open to the public.

Sept. 13

Cibolo Hermann Sons Lodge No. 147 will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. to benefit the Universal City Public Library. The sale will be held in the front parking lot of Christ the King Lutheran Church, next door to the library, 100 Northview. ONGOING PROGRAMS

Universal City Citizen’s Police Academy fall classes start Sept. 9 and run for 10 weeks, from 6-9 p.m. each Tuesday at the U.C. Public Works Building. Classes are free. The Universal City United Methodist Church at 90 Winn Ave., is holding an Arts and Crafts Show Oct. 4 and is seeking crafters/vendors. Cost: $35 for a 6-foot table and one chair.
