Clark, Brandeis and TMI-The Episcopal School of Texas have wasted no time in establishing momentum.

All three teams are off to impressive 2-0 starts and there’s no question they want to keep the good times rolling.

That is especially true this week for Clark and first-year school Brandeis as the two begin their rivalry in their 28-5A openers Saturday at Farris Stadium.

Of all the victories, Clark corners the market on drama. After rallying for a 20-16 victory over Churchill in their opener, the Cougars overcame a 17-0 deficit for a 24-17 win over Alamo Heights this past week.

The Cougars made their comeback behind the running combination of quarterback Hayden Greenbauer, who scored three second-half touchdowns, and Jock Tilghman, who romped for 196 yards on 21 carries.

The key play came in the fourth period as Alamo Heights fumbled Adair Campbell’s 52-yard punt. Aaron Durke recovered the ball at the Heights’ 7 to set up Greenbauer’s 4-yard touchdown.

“I’m getting too old for this,” Clark coach Lloyd Alexander said. “We had a season a few years ago when someone dubbed us the Cardiac Kids, because we won about five games in the last two minutes. I don’t know if I want to go through that again, but I’ll happy if we win.

“We had two great comebacks and it’s good to get off to a 2-0 start. It sets the tone for us. The first two games were a learning experience and we ended up on the positive side.”

Even though the Cougars have enjoyed two happy endings, Alexander would like a happier beginning. He’s pleased with his team’s ability to bounce back from deficits, but the Clark coach would prefer avoiding those situations whenever possible.

“We feel pretty confident going into district,” Alexander said. “We feel like the comebacks helped us get better as a team. But we need to become better as a team and get to a point where we don’t put ourselves in those types of situations.

We have to execute better in some areas and keep getting better each week.”

Brandeis carried the momentum from its opening win over Johnson with a 38-14 thumping of Canyon Lake.

Carlos Guevara and Kyle Sewell led the offensive assault.

Guevara rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns, while Sewell passed for 224 yards and two touchdowns.

One of the most unique stats came from Brandeis’ defense, which recorded two safeties in the first period.

No question Brandeis, which has players from Clark, O’Connor and Marshall, has made an early impression on 28-5A coaches.

“Coach (John) Campbell (Brandeis head coach) has done a great job,” Alexander said. “They really execute well. Another thing is their kids came from good programs. They went over to Brandeis expecting to win. I know the kids we sent over are hard-working kids.”

TMI, which plays D’Hanis Saturday, soared to a 48-6 victory over Medina.

The Panthers jumped to a 28-0 halftime lead, with a good portion of the offensive heroics coming from John Rowdy Key.

Key, who rushed for 181 yards on 10 carries, set the tone with touchdown runs of 40 and 34 yards in the first period. Tyler Barclay and John Matthews got into the scoring act in the second quarter by teaming for 7 and 5-yard touchdown passes.
